On November 11, 2011 (Veterans' Day), there was a Victory Party for our National Commander for the American Legion. Many attended this special event to celebrate the election of Fang Wong as National Commander. Lion Dance was performed by Master Antonio Chuy and students of the Praying Mantis Martial Arts Institute. Best wishes to our National Commander!!!

Many gathered at the New York City Kimlau Square Park to attend the 2011 American Legion September 11th Remembrance Service conducted by the Lt. B. R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post 1291, Department of New York, last night. The Honorable Judge Randall Eng conducted the ceremony. "Striking the Four Five", Candlelight ceremony, Laying of the Memorial Wreath, Bell Tolls, and Ceremonial Rifle Volleys and "Taps" were conducted at this Remembrance Service. Many members of the Kimlau Post 1291 (the Legion, Auxiliary and the Sons) attended as well as many members of local associations and members of the Chinatown community. Many distinguished guests attended this ceremony and the following speakers gave remarks:

- Kris Nelson, the American Legion Auxiliary National President
- Margaret Chin, NYC Council Member
- Grace Meng, NYS Assembly Member
- Peter Koo, NYC Council Member
- Sheldon Silver, Speaker of the NYS Assembly
- Daniel Squadron, NYS Senator
- Rosemary Yu, Assistant District Attorney, on behalf of the New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr.

According to the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of New York's Detachment Manual, there are 7 scholarships that are awarded annually. These are presented to graduating high school seniors and those attending college that are members of the Sons of the American Legion.
The Cerullo Memorial Scholarship - $500 Scholarship (four awarded annually)
The Lt. Michael L. Lewis, Jr Memorial Fund - $1000 Scholarship (two awarded annually)
William P. O'Connell Memorial Veterans Rehabilitation Scholarship - $1000 Scholarship (one awarded annually)
All interested SAL members should contact us for additional rules, eligibility requirements, application process, and each scholarship's due dates.
I want to inform all members that the American Legion is having its annual picnic at Craigmeur Park, NJ on Saturday, July 23rd, 2011.
Ticket sale starts on Sunday, June 26th, 2011 (2 to 4pm) until Sunday July 10th, 2011 (2 to 4pm) at the Post, 191 Canal Street, third floor, New York, NY. There is a maximum of 5 tickets per family. The price per ticket is $10 for each bus rider and $5 per ticket for those who will be driving there on their own.
On the picnic day, July 23, 2011, the bus will leave from Chinatown, 191 Canal St, at 9am to go to the park. The bus will leave Craigmeur Park to return back to Chinatown at 5pm.
